All About the Xerox 914: The World’s First Copier

If someone went up and asked you “where is the best printer repair near me?”, you would be able to answer with confidence “why, Cal Tech Copier, of course!” However, if someone asked you when exactly the first copy was made, you may respond with “I don’t know. Maybe the 1960s or the 1970s?” If you went with this response, you’d be wrong! It turns out that the first copy was made all the way back in the late 1930s. But how? If you’re as intrigued with the history of some of our favorite everyday furniture or gadgets as we are, then you are in the right place!

Humble Beginnings

Let’s wind the time back to 1938. Inventor Chester Floyd Carlson (1906-1968) is accredited to be the inventor of the copier, creating xerography along with German engineer Otto Kornei (1903-1993). He invented electrophotography, a technology that has been used in photocopiers since the very beginning. It could be said that as a young boy, Carlson was destined to enter the field, as he expressed an interest in science and technology in the classroom. However, things were not easy for him as a child. When his mother became too ill to provide for the family, he became the breadwinner. He went on to attend the California Institute of Technology, earning his degree in physics and completing law school at NYLS 9 years later. While still in his law studies, Carlson created the very first copy on October 22, 1938. In 1947, he would earn the royalties for xerography.

It wasn’t until 1958, however, that the first commercial copier came to be. The Xerox 914 revolutionized copy as we know it today, and it goes without saying that it was highly successful! It transcended office spaces. Creating copies no longer had to be a tedious, long and tiring process. Though the Xerox was also not light, weighing a total of 650 pounds, it is understandable why it was not available for every office space that existed during the late 1950s and going into the 1960s. As the decades went by, printer supplies and appliances would, of course, become smaller and more obtain for any business with an office.
